Southern CA and Sports

Name the sport and there will be a California Fan

The NFL completely ignores us here in Southern California, but that has not stopped us from being Sports Fans!! Great Sports Fans at that !!

And there are plenty of sports to go around; if you prefer baseball, are you an Angel or a Dodger fan? Do you bleed blue or red? It has been awhile, but both teams have won the World Series.

If you love Hockey, are you a Duck Fan or a Kings Fan? Both teams have won the Stanley Cup and both teams do every well selling out their home games.

Perhaps basketball is your choice of sports, okay then, are you a Laker Fan or a Clipper fan? Both teams share the same arena, The Staple Center. This year has been a great year for the Clipper fans. In the past the Clippers have always the bride’s maid never the bride, until this year that is.

As for Football, we do have two of the best college teams available, are you a UCLA Fan or a USC Fan?
Each team has its share of devoted fans; some fans go back generations and have passed their choice of teams on to the next. You ask a young fan of either team and you will find that one of their grandparents went there or a cousin, uncle, whomever and it’s the same, whole families are fans for years after year after years.

Try getting tickets to any of the above and you know that no matter what the NFL says, Southern CA‘s love their sports.

I had the opportunity to attend the last UCLA vs USC game, and although it wasn’t consider a complete
sell out, there was close to 100,000 tickets sold. That’s more than a lot of the NFL stats for several of their teams.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels also fill their stadiums on a continuous basis. And the fans here are loyal they attend year after year always in hope of a repeat visit to the World Series. It takes over 50,000 to sell out a Dodger game, yet before last year they did that on a continuous bases year after year.

Even with a dreadful start to the season, the Lakers are still selling tickets to their home games, perhaps not selling out the games, but enough to let the Lakers know that the fans are still there and supporting them. The Clippers are also doing very well with their ticket sale.

It seems that although the NFL continues to think that our ‘market’ isn’t strong enough to support a ‘nationally rank team’. We, here in Southern CA are doing much better than other areas of the country that already have team, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars or how about the Arizona Cardinals, or my favorite, the Miami Dolphins. We continue to supporting our local teams no matter what the sport is.

In my opinion it comes down to money, it always comes down to the money! Don’t know how the money comes into it, because Southern CA already has several investors that are willing to put up a ‘chunk of change’ and there are several teams willing to discuss moving here. All I know is that we have not had a team here since the LA Rams moved to St. Louis and what use to be the LA Raiders, left in the middle of the night’ crawling back to Oakland and that was over 17 years ago.

The talk of moving a team here as gone as far as investors locating 2 sites that could possibly work. One being near the Staples Center in downtown LA and the other being in the City of Industry where the
57 and the 60 freeways meet. Investors have drawn of plans, submitted them for approval and even put out feelers for NFL teams interested in moving here.

What does Southern California get back in response for all this work, the NFL commission had decided to put the idea of moving a team to LA on the back burner for now. The NFL has more pressing problems to deal with according to Roger Goodell, who on a side note has just received a huge salary of nearly 30 million with bonus for his handling of the ‘lockout’ back in 2011.

It is too bad that Southern CA can’t find a way to put pressure on the NFL and Goodell to place a higher priory on this and get it moving again. There is money to be made by the NFL, for the team that moves here , the owners and Southern CA. The sports fans here are ripe for the pick’ens, we just need a local team to support!
