March Madness 2015

WHAT IS ‘MARCH MADNESS’?

March Madness, college playoff win or go home

March Madness, college playoff win or go home

What is it about men’s college basketball? Especially the NIT and the NCAA tournaments.

We spend hours agonizing over what schools to pick, do we go for the long shot or pick the favorites.

Some fans will use the school mascots as the deciding factor.
What school’s mascot will win over the other school’s mascots?
There are still others that will simply flip a coin, but no matter how it gets done, it seems that
everyone had their bracket.

Use to link to set up your bracket or to follow who’s in and who’s out

It starts with smaller tournaments all over the United States, each division only able to send it best college teams to the tournament.

It all comes down to only 68 teams competing over a matter of just a few weeks starting in March, hence the term ‘March Madness’ and it doesn’t end until there is just one team left standing.

The winning college teams enter the NCAA tournament; the college teams that are the runners up enter the NIT tournament as their consolation prize.

But it’s the NCAA tournament that will have people glued to their TV, radios and their computers.

Well over 3 million people signed on to ESPN’s March Madness last year to filled out their brackets, with many more just doing it for fun and not using ESPN at all.

If you are not a basketball fan it would hard for you to imagine what all the fuss is about.

I joined in on the fun last year and picked most of the favorites to win and before the end of the tournament even got close, most of my bracket was a complete bust.

However, while it lasted I was glued to the TV, watching and holding my breath as my teams either won or lost, (mostly lost) and enjoying every minute of it.

It wasn’t always like this, long before the idea of March Madness, there was still college basketball.

I can remember watching college basketball long before I had ever heard of bracketing.

However I did a ‘google’ search to find out that the use of brackets go all the way back to 1943.

But didn’t catch on until the mid 1982 when CBS actually showed the use of the bracket on TV. However, I personally think the whole bracket obsession really began with ‘social media’ .

Anyone that owns a cell phone, Pad, or computer can keep track of all the basketball teams, the scores and get immediate updates regarding the status of their personal bracket.

That in itself opened up the game of college basketball to everyone and anyone.

All I know is that I am a UCLA Fan, but I have also been known to root for USC, Stanford, Cal, and a few other California College team, but my heart still belongs to the Bruins.

There was hope this year for UCLA and several other CA college teams to immerse from their local tournaments and onto being one of the 64 teams to go to play in the March Madness tournament.

We all know that Baseball is still listed as ‘The Great American Past Time’.

But with the invention of the brackets, and social media, college basketball might be the new great American past time at least during March Madness.

There has been quite a bit of news regarding the loss of production in the work force do to this madness for college basketball.

Some employers have tried to embraced it and use it as a means to improve moral in the workplace, others just see it as a waste of time, their time and their time is money.

I see no end to this phenomenon known as ‘march madness, as long as everyone loves a winner and these games are set at such a fast pace, what’s not to love. TV sponsors know this and have adjusted the showing of ‘March Madness’ to guarantee a large viewing audience. No longer does March Madness actually end in March but closer to mid-April, ensuring the games are mostly played over weekends thus a larger audience. There are now 68 teams that will start the ‘Madness’ on March 17.

Last year I had to toss out my bracket before even getting to the ‘Final Four’ I am hopeful that this year
I will actually have a enough teams left to make it all the way to at least the ‘final four’ .

But no matter how bad or how good I do, it is still so much fun to at least try my luck and there is always ‘next year’.

NCAAF New Playoff System

NCAAF

Well, now that it is finally over, what did you think of the new playoff system for College Football???

What Do You Think

What Do You Think

It ended with the Oregon Ducks playing the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Ohio State Buckeyes taking home the win and the trophy with the final score 41 to 20.

A ‘monster’: Ezekiel Elliott’s performance keys Buckeyes in win over Oregon.

It was a strong win for Ohio, especially when Oregon was favored to win. There were a whole lot of
Sports fans that didn’t even think that Ohio should have even been in the finally four, but Ohio showed them by first beating the number one ranked team, Alabama 42 to 35 to go on to play in the very first
Collage playoff Championship game played in the Arlington Texas stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The playoff system was a huge success for college football as a whole. The highest TV rated college football ever! This will guarantee this form of college football playoffs will continue and most likely will be expanded to maybe six or eight terms ending up in the playoffs, something very similar to the NFL playoffs, which includes ‘wild cards’ terms playing for their right to play in the final Championship game.

When the college football rankings came out in mid-December, the final four were Alabama ranking 1st, Oregon ranked 2nd, Florida ranked 3rd, and Ohio State ranked 4th.

In my opinion, and the opinion of a whole lot of fans and sports commentators, there were several really good schools that for whatever reason did not make the ‘final four’.

You had the ‘Big 12’ which had two teams, TCU, Texas Christian University, The Horned Frogs (11-1) had the same ranking as Baylor, also went 11-1) and were completely left out. Boise State Broncos 11-2 was out and even Northern Illinois, Marshall of the 1st Conference USA from the East Division who was 12-1 at the end of the season.

However, this could be a simple fix, just expand the playoffs from the four that played to either 6 or 8 teams. Then TCU, Baylor and even Boise State Broncos might have made it into the playoffs.

The day after the College Football Championship Game, the new college team rankings were released. No surprise that Ohio was ranked the number one college football team and Oregon second, but what surprising was that TCU was ranked third instead of Alabama which placed Florida as fifth. Too bad
TCU did not get a chance to play in the final four.

College Football Playoff set to replace Bowl Championship Series in 2014

After several years of being pressured by ‘sports fans’ the sports media and even the colleges themselves. It has finally happened.

The Bowl Championship Series, better known as the ‘BCS’bcs_logo 150
will be replaced by the College Football Playoff system starting in 2014.

This will be the last season of the multi-bowl system.

The BCS conference commissioners announced this new Football Playoff System will totally replaced the individual bowls games now played. This meeting was held this past April 2013 in Pasadena, California and lasted three days.

They also selected the remaining three sites for the six-bowl semifinal rotation in the new system and the site of the first championship game which will be held January 12, 2015.
The website www.collegefootballplayoff.com has been set up and is running. This site allowed fans to vote on a new logo. It also has a Twitter handle.

When it was finally announced that ”We’ve decided to call the playoff what it is the College Football Playoff,” BCS executive director Bill Hancock, who will hold the same position in the playoff system, said in a statement..

If you are interested in how the BSC commissioners arrived at their decisions; you can clink on any of the following links.

April 2012: BCS big steps toward playoff

Jan. 2012: Emmert would support playoff

The BCS Commissioners even hired Premiere Sports Management in Overland Park, Kansas to help come up with a name and brand the new system.

If everything works out perfectly, the new postseason format will create two national semifinals to be played New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, with the winners advancing.

The six bowls in the playoff rotation will host marquee, BCS-type games on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day during the seasons they do not host a semifinal. Three semifinal spots have already been decided: the Rose, Orange and Sugar bowls.

Four other bowls have bid for the final three spots. The clear front-runners are the Cotton, Chick-fil-A and Fiesta. The Holiday Bowl in San Diego also put in a bid.

The first semifinals playoff games will be played at the Rose Bowl and the Sugar bowl.

The site of the first national championship game in the new system was also determined at these meetings and the finalists were Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the billion dollar home of the NFL team and the Cotton Bowl, and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., home of the Buccaneers.
Arlington is the favorite to land that first championship game. However, the home of the Dallas Cowboys won out and will host the very first College Playoff Game.

Also on the agenda at this meeting with the commissioners was the composition of the selection committee that will set the field for the playoff. They have said they would like the committee to be similar to the one that picks the teams for the NCAA basketball tournament, made up of conference commissioners and athletic directors.

This is a huge overhauling of a system that at one time was the envied of the sports world, but as College Football
has grow up along with social media, fantasy football , which is not only being played in the NFL but also at the college level now and with the ever increasing amount of money that colleges get from TV coverage.

The money doesn’t stop with just TV coverage either, it flow of money also comes from ‘games’ sold using the college logos and even more money coming from endorsements from advertisers, such as Nike.
monopoly_center_broad 150
College football is not just for college students and their alumni anymore, it is all about the TV coverage and money.

This is the main reason behind the fact that college football had to move beyond the crazy bowl system that they are using now and into a system that will clearly have a winner and only one winner! were_number_1-75
