I wrote a very similar blog to this last year and as I was writing this there had not been much change in the way the Dodgers were playing. A few of the names of the players have changed but the results were pretty much the same. However as I am continuing to write, the Dodgers have moved from 3rd place into 1st place at the close of May.

I know it’s only June, and there is still a lot of baseball left before the season ends, but as a Dodger fan it was hard to watch the way the team was playing in March and April. We complained about the lack luster dodgers under the management of Don Mattingly, so he gets replaced by Dave Roberts. However, with this being his second year with the Dodgers, I was really hoping for more from Dave Roberts and for the first couple of months it was really hard to watch him make the choices he made. But that was April; May has been a very good month for Roberts.

This past April’s performance was not up to what we have come to expect from our beloved Dodgers and there are still several problems that are so apparent even to us couch coaches. Some of the problems were with the younger player, the rookies’ just learning the game as a Dodger.

However, I am going to blame a lot of problems on the Dodgers older players not staying healthy, such as Ethier, Van Slyke, Turner, even Utley and Gonzalez have not been able to stay off the DL. The list for the Dodger pitchers that are on the DL is even longer.

Unfortunately some of these problems were the reasons the dodgers did not make it past the first round of the playoffs last year and well as the year before that.

The first and foremost problem is that the dodgers only have ONE solid pitcher by the name of Kershaw and even Kershaw is showing his age a bit. You might be able to win your division with one pitcher, the dodgers did exactly that last year, but with only one dependable pitcher, you are not getting past the first round of the playoffs. The Dodgers really need to find a way to keep the pitchers off the DL.

We have Maeda, who doesn’t have the strength to pitch past the 5th inning and the one time he does, he is immediately moved over to the DL list. Don’t even get me started on Ryu, 5 losses – only one win and he was a starter??

The Dodgers have at least improved their list of good relief pitchers, they haven’t blow has many leads this year, at least so far.

The Dodgers know that it takes more than a couple of good hitters and one or two good pitchers to get the Dodgers to the World Series, hopefully for the rest of the season the Dodgers will continue to pull it together. They will need to be on top of their game to knock the Rockies out of first place.

But what about Dave Roberts himself? Should I question his ability to do what is necessary to bring the team together? Some say yes, some say no. Roberts didn’t help his cause much either when during the Dodger game against the Rookies on May 11, he left Ryu in to pitch even when he allowed 10 runs. But he is definitely a better manager than Mattingly was and he does seems to be doing well with the rookies and that’s a good sign.

As the Dodgers closed out May the Dodgers are just a tad over 600 and in 1st place with a half game lead on the Rockies. The Dodgers’ rival, the Giants are in fourth leaving the Padres once again in last place.

The Dodgers finished the month of April with 14 wins and 12 losses. May started out a little better but not enough to overtake the Rockies with 19 wins and 9 losses.

The Dodgers need more than Kershaw, it’s unfair to expect him to carry the team to the playoffs especially after his last performance on May 28 when he had to be pulled out before he even completed the fifth inning .

The football season for 2016 is coming to an end

It’s January and that means we are coming close to the end of the College football season with only a few Bowl Games left.  The season will finally end with the last of the ‘bowl games, which is the CFP National Championship game being played January 9.

January also means the NFL season is also drawing to a close.  The playoffs will start with the Wild Card Round which will be played January 7th and 8th.

The next round will be the Division Round which is scheduled to be played January 14^th and 15^th.  Then the playoffs move on to Conference Championships, which will be played January 22^nd.

There are going to be more than just a few fans that will not be renewing their season tickets for the LA Ram games, will at least not unless there are slightly discounted.

It is not just the NFL that will be moving players and coaches around, colleges will also be playing musical chairs with their coaches.  Fortunately for most players they are tried in to the college with their scholarships and cannot easily be moved around from school to school.

The month of October is one of the few months of the year that just about every kind of sports is available to watch. October is filled with a ton of sports action.

It starts off with the closing of the regular MLB season, then the wild card playoffs, ending with the World Series, last year the Kansas City Royal won the World Series, who will it be this year is anyone guess. There are quite a few baseball fans that are hoping for a repeat of Kansas City Royal’s winning the World Series. Of course I will be rooting for the Dodgers, it will be a lon shot but it could happen.

By the way, the Dodgers have already won their division, now we just have to wait and see if the Dodgers can make t pass the first round of the playoffs this year, it would definitely be a long shot, but it would be nice to see a National league team win, (except for the San Francisco Giants, of course).

October also saw the retirement of one of the most loved baseball broadcasters, Mr. Vin Scully. After 67 years of calling the Dodger games, he has called it quits. During the last Dodger home game which was played on September 25, the Dodgers and their fans played tribute to Scully. It was truly amazing to watch.

We also have the continuation of the NFL Football, which just started a few weeks ago, already there are more than a few upsets, but what I have noticed is the overwhelming amount of injuries by the players this year. I thought last year was bad, but this year is even worse.

Someone really needs to look into it, is it due to the shorter ‘boot camp’, or the earlier televised ‘preseason’ games, or just bad luck? Whatever the reason, it is really running havoc with Fantasy Football.

Could it be just be due to the fact that professional football is now being played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday now, maybe not enough down time between games for the players to rest?

There is also the continuation of college football. It is always fun to watch college football; these players are giving their all for their school, and perhaps a slight chance of making to the NLF. We are so fortunate to have not just one but two hockey teams here is Southern CA and whether you are a Kings fan or a Ducks fan, doesn’t really matter, just like if you prefer the LA Angels or the LA Dodgers, doesn’t matter, you want both teams to do well at least until they play each other.

Wednesday Oct 12 7:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the LA Kings with them playing the San Jose Sharks.

October is a great month to be a sports fan, there is such a wide assortment of sporting events. Well, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are now a thing of the past, another one for the history books.

I don’t know about you, but I just couldn’t get all that worked up over them this year. This is not usually the case, I love the summer games. My favorite sporting events are usually water polo, swimming and of course, gymnastics, both the men and the women. So what happened!

I tried, I watched several of the events, starting with the opening ceremony, but just couldn’t get up the enthusiasm. I spoke to several of my fellow sport fans and they were also unimpressed with most of the televised games. So, again what happened?

Was all the commercials, which seems to last longer than the event itself. It seemed that for every 5 minutes of commercials, there was 5 minutes or less of watching the actual games.

Or perhaps it was the weird scheduling of the events. For instance, the TV menu would say, water polo, which I had been waiting for, only to find instead another basketball game between two countries that I didn’t even know had a basketball team.

I totally missed seeing the USA play basketball, water polo or even any of the gymnastics, I have no idea when they were actually on TV. Looked for them, even followed the teaser ads that NBC placed through-out the day, but totally missed them anyway. I keep thinking maybe they were on so late that I fell asleep before they aired. But if that’s the case, where were the re-runs.

I would also like to know what happened to showing the USA Olympic athletes actually getting their gold, silver or bronze medals. Only saw one team, and that was the women’s group gymnastics get their gold.

Most of my fellow sports fans were able to see some of the events, more than I got to, but no thanks to TV, it was basely due to watching the events on their Cell Phones by live streaming. Unfortunately not everyone in the USA has a mobile phone plan that allows for unlimited ‘airtime’.

Hopefully NBA will learn from their mistakes, they have four years in which to do so.

However, I am glad to see that the USA did so well in the games and to see the diversity in who made the teams. There were several events that I did not know the USA had a team good enough to make it to the Olympics, and not only make it, but they did very well.

The USA took home a total of 121 medals. A total medal count of 46 Gold, 37 Silver and 38 Bronze. Not bad, not bad at all. The next country in total medal count was China, with 70, Great Britain with 67 and Russia with 56. Again not bad, just wish the spectators watching from their TV sets were able to watch the USA get some of these medals.

The games last day was Sunday, August 21, which ended will the closing ceremonies. Rio sure knows how to go out on top. That was a show of shows put on by Rio. It was great seeing George Michael, The Spice Girls and The Who perform once again.

It is so frustrating to watch the Dodgers finally take the lead, and then Pedro Baez, or, Chris Hatcher or even JP Howell come in and blow it. Not just once or twice, but again time after time. Let talk sports for May

Sports May 2016, as I tried gathering my thoughts as to what my main topic would be for this month’s sports blog, I did a little remising of my past blogs for the month of May. I did one a few years ago on Little league baseball, or how about the one on the fall of the LA Lakers, which to this day they have not yet recovered and the rise of the LA Clippers. The Clippers have made the playoffs again this year and are heavily favored.

I could write a whole blog on the many upsets that occurred during this year’s ‘March Madness. What a tournament that was. My bracket was so destroyed by the 3rd round, I just had to give up and throw in the towel, as did many of my friends and family members. I even had the nerve to pick Kansas winning the whole thing, like I said, ‘bracket destroyed’!

I was even leaning toward doing this month’s blog on Baseball and my two favorite teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but already did that last month. Besides we are only a month into the season, plenty of months leave to tackle that topic again.

However, I do have a major beef, with all the money the Dodgers have spend on pitchers and the Dodgers have a ton of them to choose from on their roster, why do they keep using the same ineffective relieve pitchers, day after day after day! They can be traded to another team’s minor division or better yet get call back to the majors as a replacement for someone that gets hurt or just to shake up the team, add a little new chemistry to the team.
