sports October 2016

The month of October is one of the few months of the year that just about every kind of sports is available to watch. October is filled with a ton of sports action.

It starts off with the closing of the regular MLB season, then the wild card playoffs, ending with the World Series, last year the Kansas City Royal won the World Series, who will it be this year is anyone guess. There are quite a few baseball fans that are hoping for a repeat of Kansas City Royal’s winning the World Series. Of course I will be rooting for the Dodgers, it will be a lon shot but it could happen.

By the way, the Dodgers have already won their division, now we just have to wait and see if the Dodgers can make t pass the first round of the playoffs this year, it would definitely be a long shot, but it would be nice to see a National league team win, (except for the San Francisco Giants, of course).

MLB

October also saw the retirement of one of the most loved baseball broadcasters, Mr. Vin Scully. After 67 years of calling the Dodger games, he has called it quits. During the last Dodger home game which was played on September 25, the Dodgers and their fans played tribute to Scully. It was truly amazing to watch.

We also have the continuation of the NFL Football, which just started a few weeks ago, already there are more than a few upsets, but what I have noticed is the overwhelming amount of injuries by the players this year. I thought last year was bad, but this year is even worse.

Someone really needs to look into it, is it due to the shorter ‘boot camp’, or the earlier televised ‘preseason’ games, or just bad luck? Whatever the reason, it is really running havoc with Fantasy Football.

Could it be just be due to the fact that professional football is now being played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday now, maybe not enough down time between games for the players to rest?

www.NFL.com

By the way, the new LA Rams have arrived and the Los Angeles fans have more than exceeded the expected increase in cash flow to the Rams’ owner and the City of LA. Even the price of just parking your car for the game will probably go down in

There is also the continuation of college football. It is always fun to watch college football; these players are giving their all for their school, and perhaps a slight chance of making to the NLF. The famous UCLA and USA game will be held at the Rose Bowl Saturday 19th of November, which of course, will be a sellout.

For what it’s worth, both USC and UCLA have not started out as winning teams, personally I blame the coaches, both teams have the talent and should be a whole lot better than what we have seen so far, but the selections of plays being called by the coaches do not make the best use of the talent available. Both teams need to go back to the drawing board and either hire a new head coach or at least a new offensive coach.

If you are not a fan of baseball or football, perhaps you are a fan of soccer and you are in luck because our LA Galaxy Soccer team is winding down their 2016 season with just a few games left. Then it’s off to the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers season is also starting this month. Good news for Lakers fans the opening game of the 2016/2017 season is Thursday Oct 13 7:30 pm with the Lakers playing the Sacramento Kings. Although a lot of Kobe fans were relented to see him retire, fortunately this did setup the Lakers to be able to do a whole lot of trading up during the off season. I think the Lakers will surprise more than a few people this season and be a real contender.

The Los Angeles Clippers will also be back. Starting with Thursday Oct 27 7:30 pm which is the opening game of the 2016/2017 NBA Basketball season for the LA Clippers playing the Portland Trail Blazers

Now, if you are thinking, ‘that yes’ there is a lot of sports going on in the month of October,
I haven’t even mentioned hockey yet. The NHL starts its season in October almost the same time as basketball.

We are so fortunate to have not just one but two hockey teams here is Southern CA and whether you are a Kings fan or a Ducks fan, doesn’t really matter, just like if you prefer the LA Angels or the LA Dodgers, doesn’t matter, you want both teams to do well at least until they play each other.

Wednesday Oct 12 7:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the LA Kings with them playing the San Jose Sharks.

and on Thursday Oct 13 5:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the Anaheim Ducks playing the Dallas Stars.

October is a great month to be a sports fan, there is such a wide assortment of sporting events. It’s also the end of summer with the weather cooling off, the leaves on the trees changing, and the days are getting shorter. It’s a great time to get off the sofa and take that long walk between watching all the games on TV.

Sports Blog – May 2016

sports May 2016

Let talk sports for May

Sports May 2016, as I tried gathering my thoughts as to what my main topic would be for this month’s sports blog, I did a little remising of my past blogs for the month of May. I did one a few years ago on Little league baseball, or how about the one on the fall of the LA Lakers, which to this day they have not yet recovered and the rise of the LA Clippers. The Clippers have made the playoffs again this year and are heavily favored.

www.nba.com/clippers

I could write a whole blog on the many upsets that occurred during this year’s ‘March Madness. What a tournament that was. My bracket was so destroyed by the 3rd round, I just had to give up and throw in the towel, as did many of my friends and family members. I even had the nerve to pick Kansas winning the whole thing, like I said, ‘bracket destroyed’!

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/cp/sports/2016-ncaa-tournament
I was even leaning toward doing this month’s blog on Baseball and my two favorite teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but already did that last month. Besides we are only a month into the season, plenty of months leave to tackle that topic again.

However, I do have a major beef, with all the money the Dodgers have spend on pitchers and the Dodgers have a ton of them to choose from on their roster, why do they keep using the same ineffective relieve pitchers, day after day after day! I know it’s still early in the season and maybe they are hoping for some improvement, but most fans, including me would rather lose a game with a new relieve pitcher than keep losing with the same ones over and over again!

www.Dodgers.com

So, I guess I am left with either the NBA playoffs or the NHL playoffs, or better yet Kobe Bryant.

It’s hard to believe that Kobe will not be back next year and it’s unfortunate that the LA Lakers are still ‘bottom feeding’ in the rankings for 2016. I think this makes either the third or fourth year in a row that they didn’t even make the playoffs, let alone come in dead last.

Kobe Bryant Retires Tonight

And even through this was Kobe last year as a Laker, the Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, he did manage to go out in style, ‘Kobe style’ that is. His last game as a LA Laker, he scored a record high of 60 points. That in its self was totally amazing!

There was also Adam LaRoche, of the White Sox, who decided to throw in the towel when he could no longer bring his son to work and hang out in the dugout.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/no-one-is-wrong-about-adam-laroche/
However, the retirement of Vin Scully is the one that personally I will feel the most. I have been a Dodger fan for many, many years and one of the reasons I am a true blue fan is the voice of the Dodgers, Scully! It didn’t seem to hurt as much somehow that the Dodgers lost, he always had a way of letting the fans know that it was only a game, and there is always another game right around the corner.

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Dodgers-Scully-says-he-s-retiring-after-2016-6473854.php
I also loved the baseball stories and yet never missed a pitch or a hit. Besides all the baseball stories came the personal ones, not about him, but about our players, making them just a tad more human to us, the fans. He had a way of making it look and sound so easy and yet personally I don’t think there is anyone that does it better.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/146129476/vin-scully-announces-2016-will-be-last-season
I am looking forward to continue watching Dodger baseball as the season continues, even though I am definitely not looking forward to this being Scully’s last season as the one and only Dodger announcer.

http://www.si.com/more-sports/2016/04/17/media-circus-vin-scully-world-series-nba-finale-ratings

One last comment regarding Vin Scully, there is a push for Vin to one of the baseball announcers for the 2016 World Series game. This would be a great way for Scully to end his career. Hopefully he will get enough support from MLB to make this happen.

Apparently there doesn’t seem to be enough room in dodger fan’s hearts for both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. I don’t know why either.

Article by By Eric Freeman

I have been a Laker fan since before Magic Johnson played for them instead of being a part owner of the Dodgers. For the most part, the Lakers have been a great team winning the NB Championships year after year. However, for the last couple of years there have been problems with the chemistry between players, the age of several of the players and the injuries. And although I know that it is just a matter of time that the LA Lakers will once again become the first class team that they once were.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/

The fact that I am a LA Laker fan doesn’t stop me from cheering for the Clippers, after all, they are a LA Team. I am still a Laker fan, but I am also a fan of LA Sports.

Any time a team from Southern California makes it to the playoff games, as a whole, we are better for it. Shouldn’t matter what LA Basketball team makes it to the playoffs, as long as someone does, I would prefer the Lakers, but will root for the Clippers. Why? Simple, it adds money to our local economy and it’s another notch in the belt for LA Sports.

Downtown business, whether it is hotels, motels, restaurants, or local stores, they all benefit. It also gives us, the Los Angeles Fan base, a reason to gloat.

You hear it all the time about how Southern CA and in peculiar, Los Angeles, is not into sports, how we don’t support our local teams. You especially hear this from the NFL, they love to use that as an excuse as to why LA doesn’t have or need a Football team.

The politics behind why Los Angeles doesn’t have an NFL team

The only time a Laker Fan should be rooting against the Clippers is when the Clipper are playing the Lakers or they are both tied for first place and the Lakers need a win.

www.NBA/clippers

It is sort of the same thing that happens between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I am a true Dodger fan, in other words, I ‘bleed blue’. However, I will root for the Angels, except when they are actually playing the Dodgers. I will especially root for the Angels when they are playing a ‘National Team’ and from the same division as the Dodgers. Example is when the Angels play the D-backs or the Giants.

How about all the LA King fans that openly support the Anaheim Ducks when the Ducks instead of the LA Kings make the playoffs, as in this year! Would they prefer to be rooting for the LA Kings, YES! But, still better to have a Southern CA team in the playoffs than none! Go Ducks! Again this is good for Southern CA
Sports, there are a whole lot of hockey fans up north and on the east coast that didn’t even know we had a hockey team, much less two and that the LA Kings won the Stanley Cup last year and the Ducks just missed the Stanley Cup Finals by a single loss.

http://ducks.nhl.com/

What it comes down to is simple, as a Southern CA sports fan, we need to be there for all our teams regardless of what our favorites are.

And there are plenty of sports to go around here in Southern CA; if you prefer baseball, are you an Angel or a Dodger fan? Do you bleed red or blue? And, although, it has been awhile, but both teams have won the World Series with the DODGERS winning the National Division Title for 2014.

Perhaps basketball is your choice of sports, okay then, are you a Laker Fan or a Clipper fan? Both teams share the same arena, The Staple Center. This year has been a pretty good year for the Clipper fans. In the past the Clippers have always the bride’s maid never the bride, until this year that is, with the Lakers in last place and the Clippers fighting to take over first place. If you are a Laker fan, perhaps the best news will be that the Lakers are looking to add some younger player to their rouster and ditch some of their older players with over-the-top contracts. There is lots of gossip out there regarding Kobe finally tossing in the towel and retiring. Who knows? He has been saying that now for several years!

As for Football, we do have two of the best college teams available, are you a UCLA Fan or a USC Fan?
Each team has its share of devoted fans; some fans go back generations and have passed their choice of teams on to the next. You ask a young fan of either team and you will find that one of their grandparents went there or a cousin, uncle, whomever and it’s the same, whole families are fans for year after year after year.

Try getting tickets to any of the above sporting events and you know that no matter what the NFL says, Southern CA‘s love their sports. Our sporting events sell out game after game! Yet, the NFL repeatedly
States that southern CA cannot support a professional football team.

Sell-out there was close to 100,000 tickets sold. That’s more than a lot of the NFL stats for several of their teams.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels also fill their stadiums on a continuous basis. And the fans here are loyal, they attend year after year always in hope of a repeat visit to the World Series. It takes over 50,000 to sell out a Dodger game, and yet before and after the McCourt disaster, the fans have done just that and on a continuous bases year after year.

Even with a dreadful start to the season, the Lakers are still selling tickets to their home games, perhaps not selling out the games, but enough to let the Lakers know that the fans are still there and supporting them. The Clippers are also doing very well with their ticket sale.

It seems that although the NFL continues to think that our ‘market’ isn’t strong enough to support a ‘nationally rank team’. We, here in Southern CA are doing much better than other areas of the country that already have team, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars or how about the Arizona Cardinals, or my favorite, the Miami Dolphins. We continue to supporting our local teams no matter what the sport is.

In my opinion it comes down to money, it always comes down to the money! Don’t know how the money comes into it, because Southern CA already has several investors that are willing to put up a ‘chunk of change’ and there are several teams willing to discuss moving here. All I know is that we have not had a team here since the LA Rams moved to St. Louis and what use to be the LA Raiders, left in the middle of the night’ crawling back to Oakland and that was over 17 years ago.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/news/story?id=6057731

The talk of moving a team here as gone as far as investors locating 2 sites that could possibly work. One being near the Staples Center in downtown LA and the other being in the City of Industry where the
57 and the 60 freeways meet. Investors have drawn of plans, submitted them for approval and even put out feelers for NFL teams interested in moving here.

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8994427

What does Southern California get back in response for all this work, the NFL commission had decided to put the idea of moving a team to LA on the back burner for now. The NFL has more pressing problems to deal with according to Roger Goodell, who on a side note has just received a huge salary of nearly 30 million with bonus for his handling of the ‘lockout’ back in 2011.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/11/AR2011031107057.html

It is too bad that Southern CA can’t find a way to put pressure on the NFL and Goodell to place a higher
priory on this and get it moving again. There is money to be made by the NFL, the team that moves here , the owners and Southern CA. The sports fans here are ripe for the pick’ens, we just need a local team to support!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-nfl-commissioner-roger-goodell-made-nearly-30-220809067–nfl.html

Now there’s talk of the new owner of the St Louis Rams wanting to move the team back to LA. It seems
That he owns property here, right next to the ‘Hollywood Park’ in Inglewood. He has informed the NFL that it would be the perfect spot for the new NFL stadium to be built.

Rams need to follow NFL process to move to L.A.: stadium panel chief

Reflection back on sports 2013

Reflecting back on sports 2013

With 2013 winding to a close, it time to reflect on what has happened this past year in the world of sports and ask where did the time go?

http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=top+baseball+plays+of+2013

As a Dodger fan, it was definitely a good year under the new ownership. We saw some amazing pitching by Kershaw and Greinke. Kershaw even won the Cy Young. There were great plays by several Dodger players, such as Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez and Carl Crawford.

We also saw a rookie not only play well, but Yasiel Puig brought back excitement to the Dodger Stadium that the fans have not seen for several years. The Dodgers didn’t make it very far into the playoffs, but there is renewed hope for next year.

www.dodgers.com

Our local collages football teams also had a lot to offer us sports fans this past year. Without a NFL team in the Southern California both USC and UCLA get a awful lot of our support.

We found out what a difference a coach can make when dealing with a losing season, USC fires Lane Kiffin and turn the team over to an interim coach which turns the team completely around and leads the USC football to several wins.

However it was after the loss to UCLA that USC ended that coach’s rein and hire Steve Sarkisian from the Washington Huskies as the new coach for the 2014 season.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/usc/la-sp-1203-plaschke-usc-20131203-11,0,6325781.column#axzz2n2OTSyKr

With UCLA taking the win from USC at the Coliseum, it was a upset, UCLA has not beat USC at the Coliseum in a very long time. It was also two years and two wins in a row for UCLA against USC and that hasn’t happened for a long time either.

And although either UCLA or USC made it to any of the BCS Bowls, they will still play in a bowl game. It will be Stanford, with its win over Arizona, and won the Pac-12 title that will play Michigan at the Rose Bowl January 1. This was the second year in a row for the Stanford Trees.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls

We also saw lots of controversy in a lot of different sports. Baseball, NFL Football, hockey, basketball and even collage sports were not spare from making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully next year will be a better year for sports, with players not resorting to drugs and violence to solve their problems.

Passing of the Torch In the World of Sports

pass the torchIt happens in every aspect of life ‘What goes up comes down’ ‘In today –Out Tomorrow’ and it is really apparent when the ‘Passing of the Torch’ happens in the world of sports.

It happened when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and the Los Angeles Kings were on the down and out. The kings have since managed to retake the throne winning the Stanley Cup in 2012, but how long will it last. This season the Ducks are once again leading the way. score.espn.com

It also showed up with the Anaheim Angels winning the World Series in 2002 something that has alluded the LA Dodgers since 1988. The Dodgers have not been able to regain their top spot in Southern California for many, many years. Dodger fans are hopeful that with this year’s new ownership, things will change, but so far, it has been less than a good start for them. sportsillustrated

Now we get to the biggest ‘pasting of the torch’ that has occurred in recent sports history, and that my fellow sports fan is what has happened to the Lakers.

sports, los angeles lakers The mighty have fallen, so to speak, many claim that the team is just old and need new and younger players, but who knows?

However, whatever the reasons, The Clippers, which has always been ‘the other team’, the bride-maid, never the bride, the team that late night comedians poked fun at, have de-throned the Lakers this year. Have stepped into the lime-light. Clippers

The Clippers weren’t always the Los Angeles Clippers, in fact, from 1970 to 1978 they were known as the Buffalo Braves. Then in 1978 the team moved to San Diego and changed their name to the Clippers. Clipper History

In the team’s first season in San Diego, it posted a record of 43–39 under new head coach Gene Shue, leaving them two wins shy of the final playoff spot. It would be the Clippers’ last winning season for 13 years.

The 1981–82 season brought changes to the franchise as Irv Levin sold the team to Los Angeles-area real estate developer and attorney Donald Sterling for US $12.5 million. The Clippers’ poor play in the final years in San Diego resulted in averaging only 4,500 fans a game. Sterling lobbied the NBA to relocate the team to his native Los Angeles. Which they did in 1984, and once again changing their name to ‘The Los Angeles Clippers. They played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

It wasn’t until 1992 when they added several players and a new the coach that the franchise had its first winning season in 13 years.

But, once again the Clippers were on the move, only this time is was a short hop from LA County to Orange County and from 1994 to 1998, the Clippers called the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, their home, sharing the venue with the NHL’s Mighty Anaheim Ducks.

However, in 1999, the Clippers joined the Lakers and Los Angeles Kings in the new Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles. This final movie did improve their fan attendance, but it also placed them face to face with fighting the highly-popular Lakers for the LA fan base and the Clippers, with relatively low success, have always being overshadowed by the Lakers until this year.

Clippers division winners

Congrats to the Los Angeles Clippers for finally winning their division.

What the Christmas Holiday means to a Sports Fan

Christmas For a sports fan

Besides all the regular Christmas and family items, buy the tree, do the decoration, buying gifts, etc, etc. (and the list does seems endless) there is still sports!

December can be a hectic time of the year in the ‘Sports World’, starting with the baseball trades and this year there has been many surprises and a whole lot of money being spent. Both the Angels and the Dodgers, have spent the Angels getting Josh Hamilton for the outfield, to a five-year, $125 million contract and the Dodgers getting Zack Greinke as a starting starting pitcher with a $147 million, six-year deal And South Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin with a six-year contract worth $36 million and more to come, just to help prepare themselves for next season and a chance to make it to the World Series.

Then there is College Basketball and the attempts by each college team to make it to “March Madness’. Sports fans are starting to take an interest in the top schools, taking a peek at who will be in and who will be out. All this to help them get an edge in preparing their ‘Brackets’. As of today’s date, UCLA and USC are struggling and hopefully they will both make it past the first couple of rounds.

Of course, if you a sports fan? There are also the college bowl games, which started December 15 and will end with the BCS Championship game on January 15 with Norte Dame playing Alabama.
