Sports Update February 2015

The National football league completely ignores us here again in Southern California, (no surprise), but that has not stopped us from being Sports Fans!! Great Sports Fans at that !!

And there are plenty of sports to go around here in Southern CA; if you prefer baseball, are you an Angel or a Dodger fan? Do you bleed red or blue? And, although, it has been awhile, but both teams have won the World Series with the DODGERS winning the National Division Title for 2014.

If you love Hockey, are you a Duck Fan or a Kings Fan? Both teams have won the Stanley Cup and both teams do every well selling out their home games, even though we might not be able to watch them very often on our local TV/cable. Hopefully when the NHL’s contract with whatever company is responsible for showing the games on cable/TV, the NHL will push for a better deal and once again our favorite hockey teams will be shown again in prime time.

Perhaps basketball is your choice of sports, okay then, are you a Laker Fan or a Clipper fan? Both teams share the same arena, The Staple Center. This year has been a pretty good year for the Clipper fans. In the past the Clippers have always the bride’s maid never the bride, until this year that is, with the Lakers in last place and the Clippers fighting to take over first place. If you are a Laker fan, perhaps the best news will be that the Lakers are looking to add some younger player to their rouster and ditch some of their older players with over-the-top contracts. There is lots of gossip out there regarding Kobe finally tossing in the towel and retiring. Who knows? He has been saying that now for several years!

As for Football, we do have two of the best college teams available, are you a UCLA Fan or a USC Fan?
Each team has its share of devoted fans; some fans go back generations and have passed their choice of teams on to the next. You ask a young fan of either team and you will find that one of their grandparents went there or a cousin, uncle, whomever and it’s the same, whole families are fans for year after year after year.

Try getting tickets to any of the above sporting events and you know that no matter what the NFL says, Southern CA‘s love their sports. Our sporting events sell out game after game! Yet, the NFL repeatedly
States that southern CA cannot support a professional football team.

Sell-out there was close to 100,000 tickets sold. That’s more than a lot of the NFL stats for several of their teams.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels also fill their stadiums on a continuous basis. And the fans here are loyal, they attend year after year always in hope of a repeat visit to the World Series. It takes over 50,000 to sell out a Dodger game, and yet before and after the McCourt disaster, the fans have done just that and on a continuous bases year after year.

Even with a dreadful start to the season, the Lakers are still selling tickets to their home games, perhaps not selling out the games, but enough to let the Lakers know that the fans are still there and supporting them. The Clippers are also doing very well with their ticket sale.

It seems that although the NFL continues to think that our ‘market’ isn’t strong enough to support a ‘nationally rank team’. We, here in Southern CA are doing much better than other areas of the country that already have team, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars or how about the Arizona Cardinals, or my favorite, the Miami Dolphins. We continue to supporting our local teams no matter what the sport is.

NFL COMMISSIONER AXES LA TEAM IN 2015

In my opinion it comes down to money, it always comes down to the money! Don’t know how the money comes into it, because Southern CA already has several investors that are willing to put up a ‘chunk of change’ and there are several teams willing to discuss moving here. All I know is that we have not had a team here since the LA Rams moved to St. Louis and what use to be the LA Raiders, left in the middle of the night’ crawling back to Oakland and that was over 17 years ago.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/news/story?id=6057731

The talk of moving a team here as gone as far as investors locating 2 sites that could possibly work. One being near the Staples Center in downtown LA and the other being in the City of Industry where the
57 and the 60 freeways meet. Investors have drawn of plans, submitted them for approval and even put out feelers for NFL teams interested in moving here.

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8994427

What does Southern California get back in response for all this work, the NFL commission had decided to put the idea of moving a team to LA on the back burner for now. The NFL has more pressing problems to deal with according to Roger Goodell, who on a side note has just received a huge salary of nearly 30 million with bonus for his handling of the ‘lockout’ back in 2011.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/11/AR2011031107057.html

It is too bad that Southern CA can’t find a way to put pressure on the NFL and Goodell to place a higher
priory on this and get it moving again. There is money to be made by the NFL, the team that moves here , the owners and Southern CA. The sports fans here are ripe for the pick’ens, we just need a local team to support!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-nfl-commissioner-roger-goodell-made-nearly-30-220809067–nfl.html

Now there’s talk of the new owner of the St Louis Rams wanting to move the team back to LA. It seems
That he owns property here, right next to the ‘Hollywood Park’ in Inglewood. He has informed the NFL that it would be the perfect spot for the new NFL stadium to be built.

Rams need to follow NFL process to move to L.A.: stadium panel chief

But again, it seems that the NFL commissioner is backing off making a decision and has informed the
Owner of the Rams that he must go through proper channels, yada -yada -yada . . . . . . . .

End of Season, Dodgers Cleaning House

For One Thing Dodgers are cleaning house

End of Baseball SeasonIn the world of sports at the end of the season is all about who’s getting Trading or Chopped?

Dodgers Cleaning House, will it help?

No matter what the sport, at the end of every individual sport season everyone associated with that sport ends up not knowing if they will keep their job.

This is especially true when there was a high expectation for a team ‘to go all the way’ and for whatever reason they don’t.

This was true with the Los Angeles Lakers last season when not only was Paul Gasol traded to the Bull, but even their coach Mike D’Antoni was replaced by Byron Scott.

www.NBA.com/lakers

Now it’s the MLB’s turn. There are many baseball teams that were expected to a whole all better than what they actually did. It didn’t seem to matter how much money the owners of the teams spend on players, they did not live up to huge price tags.

So, who will get the axe? Who will be sent back to AAA baseball and who will get traded? No one knows for sure, but the rumors are flying all over the sports world.

The Dodgers have already made the news with the hiring of a new GM, Andrew Friedman, and the former GM of the Tampa Bay Rays. What happen to Colletti, you ask? Well the owners actually kept Colletti as a senior advisor.

http://nypost.com/2014/10/14/how-dodgers-swiping-the-rays-gm-shakes-up-baseball-world/

broom 300But I don’t think the Dodgers are done with cleaning house, high priced players that don’t earn their pay will need to either be traded or somehow, someway show the Dodger owners that they are worth the investment.

However, it just isn’t the Dodgers, how about the Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Socks, the Atlanta Braves, and all teams that on paper should be playing in the World Series.

www.MLB.com

This year the Oakland Raiders did not even wait until the end of their season to try and change from a losing season by firing their coach Dennis Allen, after only 5 weeks into their season. Then the owner hires Tony Sparano as their interim coach.

http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2014/10/07/raiders-return-to-work-under-new-coach/

But there is still the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New York Jets, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the St. Louis Rams, each and every one of these teams have a losing season so far this year! Their owners are already looking at how to get their
‘product’ producing and become winning teams. New Managers, coaches, quarterbacks, whatever it will take.

www.NFL.com

Then you have the owner of the Washington Redskins. They have already replaced their coach, traded their under-producing players and there are still facing a losing season.

http://www.nfl.com/teams/profile?team=WAS

What it comes down to is no matter how good you are in you particular sport, have a bad year and you could end of being traded or become a ‘free agent’

It sometimes doesn’t even matter that you played you very best and the term as a whole wasn’t having a good year, in the eyes of the owner, someone will take the
Fall, to become the scapegoat so to speak.

Sports updates 9/14 in Major League Baseball, Pro and College Football

Sports updates for 9/14

Sports updates for 9/14

Are you ready for the 2nd half of September and Sports? There is only a few months in the year where the ‘hype’ for various sports comes crashing together. September is such a month!

We are in the last month of the regular season of Major League Baseball. The 2014 Baseball Playoffs will start the very first week of October and to add even more drama, each league will send 2 wildcard teams to the playoffs this year instead of one each! www.mlb.com

With the Major League Baseball Playoffs just around the corner in the month of October. Who will represent the National league and who will represent the American league is the baseball lover’s first question on their mind? The second question is who will survive the playoffs to meet in the 2014 World Series.

Some familiar teams and a couple of new ones look like they will be fighting all the way to the end for a chance to make the ‘Playoffs’ and move on to the chance to play in the World Series.

The first wild card playoff game is already schedule to be held October 1st with ‘The World Series Games’ scheduled to start October 23rd. There is also the game of the moving and trading around of players and managers, which will start as soon as the very next day after the end of the regular season.

Both Dodger and Angel baseball fans are getting very excited just thinking about the possible of a playoff scenario between the Dodgers and the Angels, who at the beginning of September were both in first place.

However, in the National League, the Dodgers first have to stay in first place by staying ahead of the Giants, then get past the Washington Nationals and the St Louis Cardinals plus 2 wild card teams. www.dodgers.com

The American League will see the LA Angels have to get past the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals, and again 2 wild card teams. www.LAAngels.com

Also in September, we see the start of the NFL season, and due to the increase in popularity of football, brought on by the millions of people that play fantasy football, we will now see NFL football on Thursday, Sunday and Monday’s.

Starting in September and lasting all the way until January you have millions now
playing Fantasy Football. It has been so ingrained in our way of life that it is hard to imagine life before someone invented the thing. All I know that it has changed the way people now watch football. It is now more about the individual players and their stats than the actual teams. Amazing!

For those of us that want more than just watching the NFL, there is also College football which has also just started with both UCLA and USC winning their two game of their new season.

So far this season, College Football has proven why it has also grown in popularity over the last several years. There has been several huge upsets already and in a playoff system that doesn’t left much room for teams that lose every one game, losing your first or second game can end the collage team’s dream of making it to the BCS Championship game in 2015.

By the way, in case you have heard, the NCAA Football playoff system has been changed to further meet the demands of the growing amount of fans. You might want to check out this link if you need an update.

Passing of the Torch In the World of Sports

pass the torchIt happens in every aspect of life ‘What goes up comes down’ ‘In today –Out Tomorrow’ and it is really apparent when the ‘Passing of the Torch’ happens in the world of sports.

It happened when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and the Los Angeles Kings were on the down and out. The kings have since managed to retake the throne winning the Stanley Cup in 2012, but how long will it last. This season the Ducks are once again leading the way. score.espn.com

It also showed up with the Anaheim Angels winning the World Series in 2002 something that has alluded the LA Dodgers since 1988. The Dodgers have not been able to regain their top spot in Southern California for many, many years. Dodger fans are hopeful that with this year’s new ownership, things will change, but so far, it has been less than a good start for them. sportsillustrated

Now we get to the biggest ‘pasting of the torch’ that has occurred in recent sports history, and that my fellow sports fan is what has happened to the Lakers.

sports, los angeles lakers The mighty have fallen, so to speak, many claim that the team is just old and need new and younger players, but who knows?

However, whatever the reasons, The Clippers, which has always been ‘the other team’, the bride-maid, never the bride, the team that late night comedians poked fun at, have de-throned the Lakers this year. Have stepped into the lime-light. Clippers

The Clippers weren’t always the Los Angeles Clippers, in fact, from 1970 to 1978 they were known as the Buffalo Braves. Then in 1978 the team moved to San Diego and changed their name to the Clippers. Clipper History

In the team’s first season in San Diego, it posted a record of 43–39 under new head coach Gene Shue, leaving them two wins shy of the final playoff spot. It would be the Clippers’ last winning season for 13 years.

Some of the sensory integration challenges cialis price and typical processing demonstrated by children include: Avoiding or unnecessarily seeking sensory input in daily events. Therefore, it is considered the best buying levitra in canada herbal cure to regulate testosterone level naturally.
The 1981–82 season brought changes to the franchise as Irv Levin sold the team to Los Angeles-area real estate developer and attorney Donald Sterling for US $12.5 million. The Clippers’ poor play in the final years in San Diego resulted in averaging only 4,500 fans a game. Sterling lobbied the NBA to relocate the team to his native Los Angeles. Which they did in 1984, and once again changing their name to ‘The Los Angeles Clippers. They played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

It wasn’t until 1992 when they added several players and a new the coach that the franchise had its first winning season in 13 years.

But, once again the Clippers were on the move, only this time is was a short hop from LA County to Orange County and from 1994 to 1998, the Clippers called the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, their home, sharing the venue with the NHL’s Mighty Anaheim Ducks.

However, in 1999, the Clippers joined the Lakers and Los Angeles Kings in the new Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles. This final movie did improve their fan attendance, but it also placed them face to face with fighting the highly-popular Lakers for the LA fan base and the Clippers, with relatively low success, have always being overshadowed by the Lakers until this year.

Clippers division winners

Congrats to the Los Angeles Clippers for finally winning their division.

What the Christmas Holiday means to a Sports Fan

Christmas For a sports fan

Besides all the regular Christmas and family items, buy the tree, do the decoration, buying gifts, etc, etc. (and the list does seems endless) there is still sports!

December can be a hectic time of the year in the ‘Sports World’, starting with the baseball trades and this year there has been many surprises and a whole lot of money being spent. Both the Angels and the Dodgers, have spent the Angels getting Josh Hamilton for the outfield, to a five-year, $125 million contract and the Dodgers getting Zack Greinke as a starting starting pitcher with a $147 million, six-year deal And South Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin with a six-year contract worth $36 million and more to come, just to help prepare themselves for next season and a chance to make it to the World Series.

Then there is College Basketball and the attempts by each college team to make it to “March Madness’. Sports fans are starting to take an interest in the top schools, taking a peek at who will be in and who will be out. All this to help them get an edge in preparing their ‘Brackets’. As of today’s date, UCLA and USC are struggling and hopefully they will both make it past the first couple of rounds.

Of course, if you a sports fan? There are also the college bowl games, which started December 15 and will end with the BCS Championship game on January 15 with Norte Dame playing Alabama. Before that big game, however, there is still the December 27 Holiday Bowl with UCLA playing Baylor, the Sun Bowl on December 31 with Georgia Tech playing USC and on January 1, 2013, the famous Rose Bowl game with Wisconsin playing Stanford.

I will end this with the NFL playoffs, which will be starting soon, and the way the season has been going, it is bound to be exciting. Teams that appeared not to be able to lose have lost, take the Houston Texans or the New England Patriots. Denver Broncos are now a winning team as well as the Baltimore Ravens or New Orleans Saints are working on getting into the playoffs. Then there are the spoilers, no chance of getting into the playoffs, but can still do a lot of damage to their rivals by knocking them out. Fun, Fun, FUN!

So while you, the Sports fan, are working on that Christmas tree, wrapping gifts, or just out with the family, you will have one eye or one ear fixed to a TV or radio trying to stay informed. It is just how it works with us, the sports fan! Oh, a word to the wise, while you are at that holiday function anywhere near LA, you may not want to bring up the Lakers, that is unless you are a Clipper fan!

Happy Holidays from the Sports4Dummies.com and good luck to your favorite team.
