Sports Blog – May 2016

sports May 2016

Let talk sports for May

Sports May 2016, as I tried gathering my thoughts as to what my main topic would be for this month’s sports blog, I did a little remising of my past blogs for the month of May. I did one a few years ago on Little league baseball, or how about the one on the fall of the LA Lakers, which to this day they have not yet recovered and the rise of the LA Clippers. The Clippers have made the playoffs again this year and are heavily favored.

www.nba.com/clippers

I could write a whole blog on the many upsets that occurred during this year’s ‘March Madness. What a tournament that was. My bracket was so destroyed by the 3rd round, I just had to give up and throw in the towel, as did many of my friends and family members. I even had the nerve to pick Kansas winning the whole thing, like I said, ‘bracket destroyed’!

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/cp/sports/2016-ncaa-tournament
I was even leaning toward doing this month’s blog on Baseball and my two favorite teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but already did that last month. Besides we are only a month into the season, plenty of months leave to tackle that topic again.

However, I do have a major beef, with all the money the Dodgers have spend on pitchers and the Dodgers have a ton of them to choose from on their roster, why do they keep using the same ineffective relieve pitchers, day after day after day! I know it’s still early in the season and maybe they are hoping for some improvement, but most fans, including me would rather lose a game with a new relieve pitcher than keep losing with the same ones over and over again!

www.Dodgers.com

So, I guess I am left with either the NBA playoffs or the NHL playoffs, or better yet Kobe Bryant.

It’s hard to believe that Kobe will not be back next year and it’s unfortunate that the LA Lakers are still ‘bottom feeding’ in the rankings for 2016. I think this makes either the third or fourth year in a row that they didn’t even make the playoffs, let alone come in dead last.

Kobe Bryant Retires Tonight

And even through this was Kobe last year as a Laker, the Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, he did manage to go out in style, ‘Kobe style’ that is. His last game as a LA Laker, he scored a record high of 60 points. That in its self was totally amazing!

Infertility click to find out viagra shop is the term that defined as not being able to perform the desired sexual task properly. However, Kobe is not the only athlete to call it quits. Remember Peyton Manning, he hung up his cleats after he and the Denver Broncos win the ‘Super Bowl’ back in February of this year.

There was also Adam LaRoche, of the White Sox, who decided to throw in the towel when he could no longer bring his son to work and hang out in the dugout.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/no-one-is-wrong-about-adam-laroche/
However, the retirement of Vin Scully is the one that personally I will feel the most. I have been a Dodger fan for many, many years and one of the reasons I am a true blue fan is the voice of the Dodgers, Scully! It didn’t seem to hurt as much somehow that the Dodgers lost, he always had a way of letting the fans know that it was only a game, and there is always another game right around the corner.

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Dodgers-Scully-says-he-s-retiring-after-2016-6473854.php
I also loved the baseball stories and yet never missed a pitch or a hit. Besides all the baseball stories came the personal ones, not about him, but about our players, making them just a tad more human to us, the fans. He had a way of making it look and sound so easy and yet personally I don’t think there is anyone that does it better.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/146129476/vin-scully-announces-2016-will-be-last-season
I am looking forward to continue watching Dodger baseball as the season continues, even though I am definitely not looking forward to this being Scully’s last season as the one and only Dodger announcer.

http://www.si.com/more-sports/2016/04/17/media-circus-vin-scully-world-series-nba-finale-ratings

One last comment regarding Vin Scully, there is a push for Vin to one of the baseball announcers for the 2016 World Series game. This would be a great way for Scully to end his career. Hopefully he will get enough support from MLB to make this happen.

Rams Come To LA

February/2016

Rams come to LA

Rams come to LA
Well at least for now, Los Angeles is finally getting a football team and not just any football team, but the Rams. Apparently the Rams want back and there are several groups of dedicated Ram fans that were just delighted to welcome them back to Los Angeles with open arms.
The Rams are returning to the Los Angeles area 21 years after leaving for St. Louis. The move was approved Jan. 12, 2016 at a meeting of league owners in Houston.
I remember going to the Ram games, first at the Los Angeles Coliseum, then at the Anaheim Stadium, which they shared with the California Angels.
Rams come to LA
Back in 1977 I was an avid Rams fan, I went to as many games as I could afford. Back then the Rams were the team to beat. They won their division with the Quarterback, Pat Haden and as backup Quarterback, the famous Joe Namath, it was great! Too bad they lost to the Dallas Cowboys during the playoffs.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/ram/1977.htm
Pat Haden has since moved on to becoming the Athletic Director at the University of Southern California.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/ram/1977.htm

Then the Los Angeles Rams moved to the Anaheim Stadium, they wanted better than what the Coliseum had to offer. Unfortunately they also raised the price of admission, which reduced the amount of fans that could attend.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Los_Angeles_Rams
However did you know that the Los Angeles Ram did not start here in LA, the franchise actually started in Cleveland in 1936 and didn’t join the newly formed NFL in 1946. It was after they joined the NFL that they moved to the LA Metro area in the same year.
Rams come to LA

The move to Saint Louis took place in 1995. That day was a sad day for Southern California football fans. The reasons the team left, that the owner gave the fans was dwindling ticket sales and the desire for a new and improved stadium.
Not that the new owner of the Rams isn’t going to be making money from the LA Ram fans at their brand new stadium, but why wait a couple of years to get out of the red for all the building and relocation costs, when you can cut the time in half by having two NFL teams use the stadium.

The owner of the ‘now’ LA Rams has made an offer to the San Diego Chargers to share the stadium and thus recoup the costs in half the time.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-nfl-la-chargers-rams-20160113-story.html
The San Diego Charges could actually decide to join the Los Angeles Rams if the city of San Diego does not approve the building of a new stadium for them.

Last month the owner of the new LA Rams allowed fans to put down a $100 deposit for the purchase of a game ticket and the Rams announced a few days later that the team received more than 45,000 deposits in the first two days of its season ticket campaign.
Rams come to LA

Fans will able to put down a $100 refundable deposit by visiting the team’s website WelcomeHomeRams.com, and reserved a spot on a waiting list that will allow them to buy tickets this spring before the general public. The team reported more than 5,000 deposits in the first five minutes that the site was live.
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/NFL-Rams-Season-Tickets-366052671.html
The team will play in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving into a new stadium in Inglewood at the start of the 2019 season.
Rams come to LA

This is really great news for USC and their fans since the City of Los Angeles along with the Rams owner will be putting money into the old Coliseum to make sure it’s up to the task of being the temporary home of the Rams for a few years.
All in all I am glad that I didn’t toss out my old Ram’s Hat and Jersey and for all you new Ram Fans, if you just have to have some of the new Los Angeles Rams merchandise, use this link below.

We wish the new LA Rams luck as they make their move to Los Angeles, it’s been a long wait for us here in Southern California and yes, we deserve not such a team, but a winning one!

College Bowl Games

To Many College Bowl Games?

As I started writing this blog I realize that there were still a few college bowl games left.

However, this year there was over forty college bowl games, that was a bit much, don’t you think?

To Many College Bowl games Yes or NO

To Many College Bowl games Yes or NO

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/bowl/schedule

I tried to have the same amount of zest for each game, but it was hard. UCLA looked as bad in their bowl game as they did when they played USC. Air Force didn’t look much better playing CA-Berkeley. Or how bad was it watching Boise State play Northern Illinois at the Poinsettia Bowl on December 23, the final score was Boise 55 and Northern Illinois 17.

There were also several games that were very good and even a couple that were upsets, such as Houston upsets Florida State 38-24 in Peach Bowl.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/houston-upsets-florida-state-38-24-in-peach-bowl-212942310.htm
Or how about the Alamo Bowl , with TCU, Horned Frogs playing the Oregon Ducks, it was like watch two different games with the first half being won by the Ducks and the second half being won by the Horned Toads.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2604414-valero-alamo-bowl-2016-game-grades-analysis-for-oregon-vs-tcul
Many sports announcers have made comments about how boring this year’s bowl games were.
They blamed it on the pairing up of the teams, the amount of bowl games and the TV schedule of several games being played on New Year’s Eve.

It has been said that only Alabama-Clemson can save college football’s worst bowl season.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/only-alabama-clemson-can-save-college-football-s-worst-bowl-season-073817921.html

I understand the need for college football bowl games; I know it’s all about the money that they generate for the schools. Most of it coming from TV sponsors, but how many of these forty plus bowl games were actually worth watching? I tried to watch as many of these games as possible, but several actually put me to sleep.
Try a chiropractor’s office directory delivery overnight viagra for convenience. Men suffering from frequent PE also suffer from fatigue, weak erection, low sperm count, poor stamina, and low energy. best buy on cialis This medication with the sildenafil pills viagra canada citrate ingredient proffers an effective treatment of men’s erection problem.
The money that these bowl games generate go toward school scholarships and help support many of the other sport activities that college offer, but don’t bring in the necessary money to support them.
There is another reason that the college bowl games are important, at least to several of the senior football players, and that is to give them one last chance to show off their football skills to the NFL, thus improving their chances of entering the NFL draft.

One of the first of these senior players is the CA-Berkeley Quarterback, Jared Goff announcing he’s entering the NFL draft. Believe me, by the end of January or February the list will be long.
Unfortunately for most college football players, the majority of them will never play pro-ball.

Maybe the forces, that not only rank the college football teams during the year, but also select
what teams goes to what bowls can figure out a way to do a better job at lining up what school plays what school. This past bowl season was definitely not the best college has to offer and hopefully the selection committee will learn from their past mistakes.

Sports In December

Sports blog for December 2015

There Still Sports In December

Happy Holidays

There still Sports

There still Sports in December

For a sports fan, besides all the regular Christmas and family items, buying the tree, do the decoration, buy the gifts, etc, etc. (and the list does seems endless) there is still sports!

December can be a hectic time of the year in the ‘Sports World’ for any sports fan. Starting with the baseball trades going on and this time of the year there has been many surprises and a whole lot of money once again being spent by the Dodgers.

All this and more to come, just to help prepare themselves for next season and a chance to make it to the World Series. Hopefully it will be money better spend than the last couple of years. Dodgers take the Division Title, but get bump out of the playoffs the very first round, this year it was the New York Mets that sent the Dodgers packing.

Then there is College Basketball and the attempts by each college team to make it to “March Madness’. Sports fans are starting to take an interest in the top schools, taking a peek at who will be in and who will be out. All this to help them get an edge in preparing their ‘Brackets’. As of today’s date, UCLA and USC are holding their own and hopefully they will both make it past the first couple of rounds.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/standings

Of course, if you a sports fan? There are also the college bowl games, which started December 19 and will end with the BCS Championship game on January 11. There is always the January 1, 2016 famous Rose Bowl game following the Rose Parade, a great way to just relax and rest up after celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends and/or family.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13004471/2015-2016-college-football-playoff-schedule-bowl-schedule

Of course, if you are not a fan of basketball or even football, there is also hockey! We have two teams, the Los Angeles, Kings and the Anaheim Ducks.

Before the season started, both teams looked like they had the players that would and could take them to the playoffs, unfortunately that has not come to past for the Ducks.

Teams that appeared not to be able to lose at the start have lost, take the Miami Dolphins, the New Orleans Saints or even Green Bay. Denver Broncos are also struggling with Peyton Manning out for the season, as well as the Baltimore Ravens, again with their Quarterback, Flacco also out for the season.

Then you have the winners, the usual, New England Patriots, but how about them, Bengals or the Carolina Panthers? Then there are the spoilers, no chance of getting into the playoffs, but can still do a lot of damage to their rivals by knocking them out of the playoffs. Fun, Fun, FUN!

So while you, the Sports fan, are working on that Christmas tree, wrapping gifts, or just out with the family, you will have one eye or one ear fixed to a TV or radio, trying to stay informed.
It is just how it works with us, the sports fan!

Oh, a word to the wise, while you are at that holiday function anywhere near LA, you may not want to bring up the Lakers, that is unless you are a Clipper fan!

Happy Holidays from the Sports4Dummies and good luck to your favorite team.

Bad Calls In Sports

Oops another mistake by the Umps!
bad calls
With the upgrades in the way we watch sports on TV, and the use of re-play in almost every sport, it’s definitely had its impact on how the games are being officiated especially in football.

http://operations.nfl.com/the-officials/officiating-development/

No longer are we watching sports are the regular old-fashion TV, but most sport fans are now watching the games on Cable TV or streaming it through their Ipad, phone or computer.

We, as fans, get to see just about everything that happens on the field. Sometimes over and over again as the station repeats the play at various anglers along with comments from the sports ‘experts’.

This has really put a lot more pressure on the officials. Not only do they have to deal with the
team players and coaches at the time of the call, but with the fallout from a bad call as early as that evening when ESPN or Sports Center brings it to everyone attention. Now add to that the ‘Social Media’, which everyone on Facebook has an opinion.

However, even with this, officials do still get it wrong, and sometimes, it is very wrong!

Error in time run-off on the clock and not noticed or corrected by officials in the October game between Detroit Lions and the Seattle Seahawks
http://www.onenewspage.com/n/Sports/7559xuidc/Sports-digest-NFL-admits-officiating-error.htm

NFL admits another error in Lions-Cowboys game
http://www.9news.com/story/sports/nfl/2015/01/06/lions-cowboys-game-officiating-errors/21357789/

In college football, the ACC has taking action against the team of officials who messed up and due to their errors, the wrong team won. You say, what’s the big deal, however, again, this is college football where one loss can prevent you from going to the payoffs. Not going to the playoff means a huge loss of revenue for the college.

The ACC (The Atlantic Coast Conference) has actually suspended the team of officials
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14026475/acc-suspends-field-officials-replay-officials-wild-miami-duke-finish

With College football actually doing something to try and clear of the mess of bad officiating, the NFL needs to follow suit. Just like the football players and their coaches are held accountably for their actions, so do the officials. Some errors appear to be so blanted that you have to wonder what the officials were thinking! Was there favoritism? Did the official actually lean heavier on a certain team verses another team? A lot of fans think so, why do certain team’s quarterbacks get sacks so much more than other quarterback from other teams.
Sack a favorite quarterback and get a penalty for late hit, sack another quarterback and it fine.

It helps the men to tab sildenafil get longer erection throughout the love making session. If the improper position or any error viagra 25 mg http://secretworldchronicle.com/tag/overwatch/ condition is occurs in this neural system, it may bring some of very serious ailments. When these order cialis medicines start affecting your sexual drive, many men tend to discontinue these medicines which can cause further complication if the cholesterol levels are not kept in check. Inhibition of PDE5 allows the body to release viagra australia price find out description nitric oxide, a substance that boosts blood flow to the penile organ does not receive enough amount of blood to cause an erection, which is why getting an erection becomes difficult. How about the late whistle or an early whistle? Either one of these can affect the outcome of a game. A late whistle can also result in an injury to the quarterback, a receiver or any other player involved in the play.

Have to ask the question as to when will the NFL follow in the path of college football and make the officials actually responsibly for their actions. Perhaps a suspension of a game or two or even a monetary penalty would help the official take their jobs a little more serious.

Bad Calls In Sports

This is a very touchy subject and not just in football. Many baseball fans and sports announcer have discovered that certain officials when referring certain games against certain pitcher have either a very large strike zone or a very little strike zone.

Everyone by now has heard the story of a retired baseball player hiring Private Investigators to
get an advantage from Officials, if not click on the link, you will enjoy the read.

Lenny Dykstra admits to hiring private investigators to spy on umps
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25356639/lenny-dykstra-admits-to-hiring-private-investigators-to-spy-on-umps

This has got to be a real eye opener for the MLB. Even if Lenny’s story proves to be false, you still have to wonder ‘what if it’s true?’ How does the Major League Baseball fix the problem for the future? How does any sports venue fix the problem?

Unfortunately, when there is so much money to be had in sports now-a- days, cheating is to be expected. In sports the old say goes, ‘It isn’t cheating if you don’t get caught?’

Start of NFL Football 2015

Are We Ready for Some Football, NFL Football 2015

Well even if you aren’t, too bad, it’s here already! Pre-season started last month with a few teams already showing signs of weakness in their lineup.

Cheating is Cheating

Cheating is Cheating

The first official game of the 2015 season is September 10, with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the New England Patriots (without Tom Brady for now)

http://www.nfl.com/schedules/2015/REG1

And just like every other season some of the weaknesses can be blamed on a few ‘missing links’.

These so called ‘missing links’ are due to injuries that occurred during practices, some due to bad pre-season trades, or too many rookies that haven’t quite managed the move from College to Pro. However, there are several players that are ‘missing in action’ due to suspensions for drug use or spousal abused or something of that nature.

For a list of NFL Fines & Suspensions, use this link.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/fines-suspensions/ or http://www.4for4.com/fantasy-football/2015-nfl-suspended-players

Tom Brady is also on suspension, due to his apparent role he played in ‘deflate gate’.

The NFL suspends Tom Brady for 4 games

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12867594/punishments-handed-tom-brady-new-england-patriots-deflategate

Public Opinion regarding The Patriots and deflate gate

However, even without the ‘deflate gate’ there are a whole lot of football fans that are convinced that this is just another case of the New England Patriots cheating to get a win, and it isn’t the first time that they have been caught !

Do you remember when the New England Patriots were caught using electronic means to steal signals and otherwise violate league rules back in 2007?

To check out a list of the Patriots cheating scandals, go to
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-england-patriots-scandals-from-spies-to-snowplows/
or http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/new_england_patriots_cheating_scandal/

Of course with all the players that will have to serve out their suspensions, comes the impact that this will have on Fantasy Football. Do you or not keep a player that will not be able to play for the first game or so?

There is also the players that have been released from their contracts due to being arrested for DUI’s, Violence, spousal abuse.

The latest to fall is Aldon Smith who was released by the San Francisco 49ers on August 7 for driving under the influence, committing a hit and run and vandalism. This was the third time Smith was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving since being drafted by the 49ers in 2011.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/8/7/9116037/aldon-smith-released-49ers-arrest

If Smith was going to be one of your Fantasy Football selections, you need to go back to the drawing board, who do you replace him with. What if you already had your team picked and ready to go with Tom Brady as your starting Quarterback, do you keep him and use another pick to get a back-up for Tom. But who? Who will be available?

Add to that all the injuries that have occurred before the season even started and you can really see how much all this has already affected the game. With RG3 out once yet again with another concussion and even though he is already back in practice, you have to wonder, why was he even out there setting himself up to be injuried again.

Do team owner and mangers continue in this old-fashion method of preparing for the start of the season, or do they start looking for alternatives.

This is one solution to meaningless NFL preseason games with meaningful injuries: Dual practices maybe?

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/solution-to-meaningless-nfl-preseason-games-with-meaningful-injuries–dual-practices-021028059.html;_ylt=A0SO8y6pEN1Vw6UAW7hXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzcDJjOXA2BGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDVklQNjE1XzEEc2VjA3Ny

It’s sad when the gossip surrounding the game of football gets more press time than the game itself. But that is exactly what has happened over the last couple of years. Remember Aaron Hernandez? He is still making the headlines.

http://www.tmz.com/category/aaron-hernandez-trial/

Or Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens, who after knocking out his fiancée in an elevator was fired by the Ravens. Even though there are several teams including the Houston Texans are in need of a running back as of now he is still a free agent.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-houston-texans-arian-foster-ray-rice-20150805-story.html

So much press time given to showing the negative aspects of players personal lives that the NFL has had to step in and try to offset it with more time and assistance given to players that need help. Adding to that is also longer suspensions for drug and spousal abuse giving to players along with termination for players that are arrested.

Unfortunately players suspensions and terminations and injuries, don’t just affect them and their family, it also affect their teams, the other players on the team, the team owners and their loyal fans., especially the fantasy football players.

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/signup?mktg=fantfootball-sem-ybn-gen

Hopefully we will start to see the players will see that the end result doesn’t justify the abuse and they will get help!

Hopefully Team owners and managers will see the writing on the wall and get help to the players that really need it and start taking better care of protecting the players on the field.

When that happens, we as fans, will see more press time given to the actually game instead of what we are getting now. We all love to see the hard hits, the sacks, the blocked kicks, but not to the point where the players are either injured during the game, or take their angry out on those closest to them after the game.

Here’s what a waste of $1.1 billion looks like.

San Diego, please don’t be as dumb as this Chargers stadium plan is making you look.

Your tax-free stadium is going to end up with ‘public money’ one way or another.

Years of griping about Qualcomm Stadium from the Spanos family of owners and some screw-turning from the NFL, which refused to award San Diego another Super Bowl until the Chargers updated their 1967-vintage facility, had previously yielded only chuckles from San Diego. A string of mayors and city councils refused to pay a dime of public money toward a new facility while a family with 10 figures of net worth held its hand out.

However, the Spanos clan did the unthinkable and partnered with the Chargers’ AFC West rival Oakland Raiders on a proposed $1.7 billion facility in Carson, Calif., that was approved in April. That’s when San Diego began losing its nerve. Rushed by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s own Los Angeles stadium proposal and pressured by NFL representatives to get an offer on the table, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his stadium planning committee announced plans for a $1.1 billion stadium that “won’t raise taxes.” San Diego, please read the fine print on this plan.

While the Los Angeles Times pulled out the pom-poms and swiped some choreography from Bring It On for its enthusiastic A-N-N-O-U-N-C-E-M-E-N-T of the new stadium plan, it glossed over the fact that the Chargers and the NFL would be responsible for only $500 million of those costs. Oh, and the Chargers still feel they’re “being asked to contribute far more than other NFL teams have been required to pay when their stadiums were built.” Meanwhile, the project requires $173 million in bonds, $121 million from San Diego, $121 million from San Diego County, an estimated $100 million from ticket surcharges and seat licenses, and the city’s $225 million sale of the Qualcomm Stadium site to a developer.

Though the proposed plan asks the Chargers to pay $1 million per game in rent ($8 million per year, more during playoff years), the “won’t raise taxes” portion of this deal is very much in doubt. Just ask the good people of Indianapolis and Indiana. They forked over 86% of the $720 million cost of the Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium before it opened in 2008 and borrowed money from Goldman Sachs GS, +1.39% for a bond sale to cover the cost and minimize the tax burden. However, as Bloomberg discovered, the group in charge of those bonds just paid Goldman $71 million to get out of that bond deal after an interest-rate-swap scheme went sour. As a result, hotel, restaurant and rental-car taxes that were already being used to pay stadium costs had to be increased.

NFL stadiums have soaked up an average of $250 million in public funding apiece since the mid-1990s. Harvard University urban planning professor Judith Grant Long notes that municipal or state land, lost property taxes from that land, infrastructure and annual maintenance all tack on about 25% to the cost of an NFL facility. The least the NFL can do is offer the public a say in that spending, but the NFL has rammed Los Angeles stadiums through local government without a vote and is squeezing politicians in St. Louis, Oakland and San Diego to avoid a public vote on tax money for stadiums, citing expediency.

There is no way San Diego should let this go down without a vote. Faulconer has promised one for November and a two-thirds vote would be required for approval. The NFL, knowing it doesn’t have the votes for this and that few taxpayers would agree to such a lopsided deal, sent Executive VP Eric Grubman to San Diego to declare the vote “risky.”

Take that risk. It’s your tax money and your city, San Diego. While folks in Seattle know that a public vote doesn’t always mean public money won’t go into a stadium, they also know it’s about the best tool the taxpayer has to negotiate terms. If the fourth estate would rather play cheerleader than look out for your interest, look out for you own and force a vote. If the NFL and the Spanos clan don’t like it, they know where I-5 is. Good luck getting to L.A. before the Rams and Raiders, though.

Sports April 2015, a month to remember

April was a fun month for us sports fans! No matter what sports who follow, there was something going on.

April was the beginning of professional baseball, whether you are a Dodger fan or an Angel fan, it was great just to have the season start again.

www.Dodger.com

www.LAAngels.com

However there is still a dark side to the LA Dodgers; close to 70% of the market still is unable to see the Dodgers play and Vin Scully the game due to ‘Time Warner’ not making the games available outside their own customers.

Dodgers fans to remain in the dark as TV deal reportedly falls through!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/dodgers-fans-to-remain-in-the-dark-as-tv-deal-reportedly-falls-through-143820583.html

No matter who or who is not watching them, the Dodgers are off to a good start. In my opinion, several of their new players, such as Pederson, Anderson and Rollins are a real fine. However I do think that the Dodgers still need a great closer, especially with Jansen still out at least until mid-month. It’s not bad and it could be worse!

April was also the end of a very exciting men’s college basketball ‘March Madness’. We saw the end of Kentucky run for a perfect season with their loss to Wisconsin. Then it was on to watching Wisconsin loss to Duke in the finals. It was indeed a thriller!

Just as we got use to the fact that college basketball was done for the season, on comes the NBA playoffs. It was a bit concerning that once again the LA Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, the LA Clippers did. Go Clippers!

Lakers eliminated from playoffs, team’s earliest elimination in 54 years.

You also have the NHL playoffs being played during the month of April. The Anaheim Ducks are in the playoffs, but sadly the LA Kings managed to miss the playoffs.

It was quite a shock for LA King fans when after wining last year’s Stanley Cup, they failed to even make the playoff this year. However, that means that us, the fans that were rooting for the Kings, will now turn our support to the Anaheim Ducks, after all, it would still be a Southern CA team winning the Stanley Cup!

It is a good thing is that Southern California has at least two teams for most sports, your team does make the playoffs, chances are the other team might. Such as, Lakers out, Clippers in, Kings out, Ducks in, Dodgers in, Angels out, (or the other way around, to early to tell yet).

Even USC or UCLA fans will route for the other team if their team doesn’t make it to the playoffs. Still beats an ‘outsider winning’. It’s always better for Southern CA when one of our local teams win!

Too bad the same can’t be said for professional football, LA still has no team! But that’s a whole other topic for another blog.

April is also important for the NFL. Most teams are in the hunt for new players, trading old ones, gaining new ones, even restructuring old contracts and make new ones.

There has even been a few surprises, such as the Washington Redskins deciding to pull the ‘franchise tag’ for RG3, when everyone else thought the owner would use the opportunity to trade him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/why-in-the-world-would-redskins-pick-up-rgiii-s-option–let-s-explore-151647567.html

The NFL also releases it’s fall schedule in April. LA Fans can start marking their calendars, booking their air flights, hotels and whatever they will need in order to attend either San Diego Charger or the Oakland Raiders games.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/2015-nfl-schedule–league-releases-the-full-regular-season-slate-000758569.html

This year, some team are really going outside the box in their attempt to gain depth in their rotations, even to the extent of the Eagles hiring Tim Tebow as their 4th Quarterback, A bit of an overkill, having 4 QB, but who knows. . .

Eagles VP of player personnel explains why they signed Tim Tebow

April also brings us freaking weather in which baseball players have to deal with, we are all use to a bit of rain, in which we deal with rain delays, but how often do we see snow falling dealing a National Baseball Game, well it happened.

All in All, April was a great month for being a Sports Fan, can’t wait to see what May will bring!

Sports Update February 2015

The National football league completely ignores us here again in Southern California, (no surprise), but that has not stopped us from being Sports Fans!! Great Sports Fans at that !!

And there are plenty of sports to go around here in Southern CA; if you prefer baseball, are you an Angel or a Dodger fan? Do you bleed red or blue? And, although, it has been awhile, but both teams have won the World Series with the DODGERS winning the National Division Title for 2014.

If you love Hockey, are you a Duck Fan or a Kings Fan? Both teams have won the Stanley Cup and both teams do every well selling out their home games, even though we might not be able to watch them very often on our local TV/cable. Hopefully when the NHL’s contract with whatever company is responsible for showing the games on cable/TV, the NHL will push for a better deal and once again our favorite hockey teams will be shown again in prime time.

Perhaps basketball is your choice of sports, okay then, are you a Laker Fan or a Clipper fan? Both teams share the same arena, The Staple Center. This year has been a pretty good year for the Clipper fans. In the past the Clippers have always the bride’s maid never the bride, until this year that is, with the Lakers in last place and the Clippers fighting to take over first place. If you are a Laker fan, perhaps the best news will be that the Lakers are looking to add some younger player to their rouster and ditch some of their older players with over-the-top contracts. There is lots of gossip out there regarding Kobe finally tossing in the towel and retiring. Who knows? He has been saying that now for several years!

As for Football, we do have two of the best college teams available, are you a UCLA Fan or a USC Fan?
Each team has its share of devoted fans; some fans go back generations and have passed their choice of teams on to the next. You ask a young fan of either team and you will find that one of their grandparents went there or a cousin, uncle, whomever and it’s the same, whole families are fans for year after year after year.

Try getting tickets to any of the above sporting events and you know that no matter what the NFL says, Southern CA‘s love their sports. Our sporting events sell out game after game! Yet, the NFL repeatedly
States that southern CA cannot support a professional football team.

Sell-out there was close to 100,000 tickets sold. That’s more than a lot of the NFL stats for several of their teams.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels also fill their stadiums on a continuous basis. And the fans here are loyal, they attend year after year always in hope of a repeat visit to the World Series. It takes over 50,000 to sell out a Dodger game, and yet before and after the McCourt disaster, the fans have done just that and on a continuous bases year after year.

Even with a dreadful start to the season, the Lakers are still selling tickets to their home games, perhaps not selling out the games, but enough to let the Lakers know that the fans are still there and supporting them. The Clippers are also doing very well with their ticket sale.

It seems that although the NFL continues to think that our ‘market’ isn’t strong enough to support a ‘nationally rank team’. We, here in Southern CA are doing much better than other areas of the country that already have team, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars or how about the Arizona Cardinals, or my favorite, the Miami Dolphins. We continue to supporting our local teams no matter what the sport is.

NFL COMMISSIONER AXES LA TEAM IN 2015

In my opinion it comes down to money, it always comes down to the money! Don’t know how the money comes into it, because Southern CA already has several investors that are willing to put up a ‘chunk of change’ and there are several teams willing to discuss moving here. All I know is that we have not had a team here since the LA Rams moved to St. Louis and what use to be the LA Raiders, left in the middle of the night’ crawling back to Oakland and that was over 17 years ago.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/news/story?id=6057731

The talk of moving a team here as gone as far as investors locating 2 sites that could possibly work. One being near the Staples Center in downtown LA and the other being in the City of Industry where the
57 and the 60 freeways meet. Investors have drawn of plans, submitted them for approval and even put out feelers for NFL teams interested in moving here.

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8994427

What does Southern California get back in response for all this work, the NFL commission had decided to put the idea of moving a team to LA on the back burner for now. The NFL has more pressing problems to deal with according to Roger Goodell, who on a side note has just received a huge salary of nearly 30 million with bonus for his handling of the ‘lockout’ back in 2011.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/11/AR2011031107057.html

It is too bad that Southern CA can’t find a way to put pressure on the NFL and Goodell to place a higher
priory on this and get it moving again. There is money to be made by the NFL, the team that moves here , the owners and Southern CA. The sports fans here are ripe for the pick’ens, we just need a local team to support!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-nfl-commissioner-roger-goodell-made-nearly-30-220809067–nfl.html

Now there’s talk of the new owner of the St Louis Rams wanting to move the team back to LA. It seems
That he owns property here, right next to the ‘Hollywood Park’ in Inglewood. He has informed the NFL that it would be the perfect spot for the new NFL stadium to be built.

Rams need to follow NFL process to move to L.A.: stadium panel chief
http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-nfl-stadium-20150117-story.html#page=1

But again, it seems that the NFL commissioner is backing off making a decision and has informed the
Owner of the Rams that he must go through proper channels, yada -yada -yada . . . . . . . .

NCAAF New Playoff System

NCAAF

Well, now that it is finally over, what did you think of the new playoff system for College Football???

What Do You Think

What Do You Think

It ended with the Oregon Ducks playing the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Ohio State Buckeyes taking home the win and the trophy with the final score 41 to 20.

A ‘monster’: Ezekiel Elliott’s performance keys Buckeyes in win over Oregon.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/a–monster—ezekiel-elliott-s-performance-keys-buckeyes-in-win-over-oregon-070817842.html

It was a strong win for Ohio, especially when Oregon was favored to win. There were a whole lot of
Sports fans that didn’t even think that Ohio should have even been in the finally four, but Ohio showed them by first beating the number one ranked team, Alabama 42 to 35 to go on to play in the very first
Collage playoff Championship game played in the Arlington Texas stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The playoff system was a huge success for college football as a whole. The highest TV rated college football ever! This will guarantee this form of college football playoffs will continue and most likely will be expanded to maybe six or eight terms ending up in the playoffs, something very similar to the NFL playoffs, which includes ‘wild cards’ terms playing for their right to play in the final Championship game.

When the college football rankings came out in mid-December, the final four were Alabama ranking 1st, Oregon ranked 2nd, Florida ranked 3rd, and Ohio State ranked 4th.

In my opinion, and the opinion of a whole lot of fans and sports commentators, there were several really good schools that for whatever reason did not make the ‘final four’.

You had the ‘Big 12’ which had two teams, TCU, Texas Christian University, The Horned Frogs (11-1) had the same ranking as Baylor, also went 11-1) and were completely left out. Boise State Broncos 11-2 was out and even Northern Illinois, Marshall of the 1st Conference USA from the East Division who was 12-1 at the end of the season.

However, this could be a simple fix, just expand the playoffs from the four that played to either 6 or 8 teams. Then TCU, Baylor and even Boise State Broncos might have made it into the playoffs.

The day after the College Football Championship Game, the new college team rankings were released. No surprise that Ohio was ranked the number one college football team and Oregon second, but what surprising was that TCU was ranked third instead of Alabama which placed Florida as fifth. Too bad
TCU did not get a chance to play in the final four.
